Anyone know of a GOOD company with affordable health insurance? - Posted By: 14+ year MT

Hi.  I am a 14+ year MT.  I love the company I am with but they offer NO benefits whatsoever.  Does anyone know of a company that is looking for a dependable MT that offers reasonably priced health insurance and would give at least 9-1/2 cents a line (which is what I am getting now). Any help would be greatly appreciated.  THANK YOU!

out of Green Bay, WI.  Has anyone taken their written testing yet?  If so, how do you think you did?  Hoping I did okay.  Really would like that position.

TransMed Systems, Inc. - Posted By: AnotherOldTimerMT

If this is a company out of Fountain Hills, Arizona RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!  The owner, Paul, is as unscrupulous as anyone can get, and plays loose and fast with pay and benefits.  It's a revolving door type of operation because no one in their right mind stays after they figure out what he is.  Check with the Better Business Bureau in Arizona and I'm sure he's on it---kinda like the Ten Most Wanted Rotten Business Owners in the USA!

COMPANIES ON MTJobs.com - Posted By: MTPRO

What is it with all of these companies that keep posting over and over on MTJobs.com???  Same companies, over and over and over and over.  My suspicion is because they absolutely can hold on to NO help.  Any other opinions on this and just how much stock does anyone else take in those companies?

Spheris a good company to work for or maybe - Posted By: tabby

Transend?   I current work for MQ and even though I like my job, I am not too sure if it will be here seeing as all of our work is being sent to our friends in India.  I was wondering about Spheris.  I was going to apply to them about 3 years ago before I got my MQ gig... Would you say that they treat their  employees fair and not bounce them from account to account?  Do they change their employees schedule like crazy?  I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and maybe answer me back... lol!  I am a single mother so MONEY is really important right now.  My bills arent but 1700.00 and you would think that I would be able to make it... but NOPE!!!  In fact I am in the hole!!!!

Hospital MTs - Posted By: Old MT

It came to my attention last week that where I work the accounts also have hospital employees who do the transcription as well.  When I lost my job at my hospital in 1995, that hospital sent its work out to a transcription service and never hired any more transcriptionists.  Was anyone aware some of these hospitals have their own MTs?  So, it seems we are all suckers as far as holidays go (as well as regular days) because I'm sure the hospital MTs have the day off while us home MTs are doing the work, which usually runs out.  This whole transcription business really sucks.  It seems like we are just filling a gap for these hospitals when they have a big work load.  I'm really sick of transcription, but it is all I know.

Thinking about IC status - Posted By: Curious

I've been thinking about finding a company that offers IC status. My current situation is this  - I'm currently an employee for a service and have asked to be moved to a part time schedule soon as I'm expecting another baby and have realized there just aren't enough hours in the day to work full time and take care of my family (this will be my third child, fourth if you count hubby :-) ). So far my supervisor has barely acknowledged my request. I have also read here that people who once worked for my current company had asked for a schedule change and were refused. This is not an option for me, I need to go part time and I need flexibility in the schedule (something I know my current company does not offer).

A couple of years ago I interviewed with Oracle Transcription and the lady who talked to me seemed very nice. I was a little put off by the IC status (I don't need bennies - hubby's are fine) mostly because it's not familiar territory. The tax thing makes me a little nervous and I wouldn't know where to begin as far as transcription software. This company seemed to be very flexible in schedules. I also liked that this company was very anti sending work overseas. But, this was 2 years ago and I doubt that position would still be available.

So, how do you go about making an easy transition from employee status to IC status and which companies offer IC positions without treating you like an employee?

Thanks

Softscript productivity, etc. - Posted By: Flybabymt

I was looking on here to see if anyone had any suggestions about improving productivity with Softscript.  I have been there 3 months and am now literally working 12 hours a day because of the things that have been mentioned; the time spent looking up account specifics and physician names, or trying to get a question answered.  There are a few good people there though, and I was hoping with the addition of Brenda Hurley maybe things will get better.  I am an ex-MQ'r and the biggest advantage I see with SoftScript is that they do not change your accounts from week to week.  I have had the same 2 for 3 months.  I have 13 years experience and they did give me a little better wage, but NOTHING CLOSE to the 12 cpl I got with the first MSTO I signed on with many, many years ago.  I'm afraid those days are gone.

Chase Transcription - Posted By: SD

First I want to thank everyone on here.  I have been working as an IC for a great company for 5 years and have been out of the loop when looking for a job.  Unfortunately, I am having to look for another job to supplement this one as my line count has been cut in half.  This board has been so informative about who to steer clear of and who are the good companies.  In saying that, I have a phone interview with Chast Transcription next week. Was hoping to get some feedback from those who do work or have worked for this company, any hints on what I should ask, etc.  Thanks in advance everyone.

No-Compete Clause - Posted By: MT In A Panic

I need help making a decision and I don't know who to ask.  My company recently had a layoff, and in order to receive my severance, they are asking that I sign a form that states that I will not work for a competitor for the next 12 months--basically stating that I will not begin to work for any company in the MT business and that I will not try to start my own business.  The severance pay only equals a very, very, very small fraction of 12 months of pay, so the compensation of this request is inadequate.

I have contacted to local attorneys.  They both said that it is legal of them to request this.  One lawyer said that I just simply should not accept the severance and that I should just try to find another job.  The second lawyer said to sign the agreement, accept the severance, and still try to find another job because the no-compete clause is just too vague and asking me to give up my career for 12 months is not something that would be supported in a court of law if my previous employer decided to prosecute.

Has anyone ever been in this situation?  What did you do or what is your advice to me?

National Transcription Providers - Posted By: Barry Watts

I've only worked for hospitals, except for a brief run with Medquist when I was still green. MedQuist happened to have a local office and that's where I went to be tested and interviewed. I can't imagine the smaller MTSOs having all those local offices, so how do they interview?  Hospitals may pay better and have better benefits, but you have to put up with their corporate culture and lots of mandatory meetings and seminars that have nothing to do with medical transcription. I'm thinking it would be great to be free of all that crap, but mostly I'm wondering if smaller MTSOs interview you by phone or if you actually have to travel to one of their offices. Thanks.

Transtech - Posted By: worriedmt

I am not going to mention the name of the hospital but it is one of the new accounts getting going in increments.

Can anyone give me info on this account, high ESLs, tons of docs that you never get can used to.

I heard this is a teaching hospital?  Doesn't that mean a bunch of interns dictating all the time and them being constantly recycled?

Is this account the whole entire gammit of satellite hospitals listed on their website or just the main one?  I want to be assigned to one or two of the smaller satellites if so because how else are you supposed to get used to the docs at such a huge system otherwise?  Any info would be much appreciated.  Please feel free to email me if you would like.  Thank you.....

Why do so many of you recommend Amphion? Good points, please? Thx. nm - Posted By: Lookin'

Is this a good pay rate? - Posted By: Nola

I was offered a position doing primarily clinic notes and letters to referring physicians at a rate of $5.50 per 1000 words.  I know much depends on the dictators, time spent looking up referring physician info, etc, but wondered if anyone else has been paid this way and how it might actually translate into dollars per hour.

It seems everywhere I haved worked they have a different and creative way of paying their transcriptionists!

Independent contractor - Posted By: csalvo

I need some help deciding on whether to take an independent contractor position. I was just offered 0.08/line being an independent contractor. Is this typical pay for an independent contractor position? I currently make that as an employee. How does the paying into Social Security work? Any feedback on employee position versus independent contractor position would be greatly appreciated. The good thing about this job is no set schedule. The paying taxes, getting own insurance, and paying into Social Security is the things that I am worried about. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
